What is Green Open Homes Chippenham?

Green Open Homes Chippenham is an opportunity to ask a Chippenham home owner about an energy saving improvement they’ve made, and see if it might work for you.

People who have made energy saving improvements open up their homes for free in-person visits to share their experiences. Visiting a home is a great way to find out about the reality of getting solar panels, insulation, triple glazing, or a heat pump without talking to a salesman.

You can have a good look at the technology, ask the home owner how easy or difficult their improvements were, and find out how much they’re really saving on their energy bills as a result.

Conniston Road – Chippenham

Energy Saving Improvements

This three bedroomed detached house has solar panels, battery storage and an Air Source Heat Pump. The heat pump installation went very well, and now the weather is getting colder, we are beginning to see how well it works. We use Octopus Cosy tariff, which gives 2 periods of 3 hours each day at half price, so we are learning to plan when to switch on appliances and get the most out of it. Rainwater is collected in four water butts for the small garden.

South West – Chippenham

Energy Saving Improvements

We installed south facing solar on our mid 80’s house in July 2016. It is a 3kw system and we had a 2.7Kw battery installed at the same time. We were an early adopter for battery storage and it has now been running for more than nine years.

In May this year we have had an Air to Water Heat Pump fitted (Grant Heat Pump) so we have not experienced a full winter. In the first three months (June, July and August) and taking our generation and feed in tariff into account our energy costs have been zero with a small profit.

Removing gas from our house has hopefully reduced our carbon foot print and reduced our costs.

Pewsham – Chippenham

Energy Saving Improvements

Ours is a detached house on the Pewsham estate, built in 1985. The loft is insulated and has had cavity wall insulation since it was built. There is double glazing throughout. All lightbulbs are LED and, since we had a heat pump installed last December, it has been fully electric. We had the house assessed for an EPC, before the heat pump was installed, and it was given an A rating.

Features:

Solar PV system (6kW – 10 panels on each of east-facing and west-facing roofs)

Tesla battery (capacity 13.5 kWh)

Eddi (solar power diverter to direct surplus energy to the hot water tank)

Daikin air source heat pump

Zappi EV charger
